Apart from liposuction, there is only one way to shed fat from our body and that is by having our body use more units of energy (calories) than we put into it in any one day. It really is as simple as that. So why do so may of us have a problem in shedding that excess weight? In fact, why do we put that excess weight on in the first place? The answer is both simple yet, complex at the same time.
The action of eating is hard wired within all of us, allowing us to gain nourishment, warmth security, love and nurturing, all from one action. We are all programmed to gain all of this simply by putting food or drink into our mouths. This action is ALWAYS connected to our emotional state
The Simply Answer:
Regardless of the different psychological and therapeutic models of how we function, they all understand and agree that we are all born, programmed to latch onto a nipple and suckle at the breast in order to survive. This action is hard wired within all of us, allowing us to gain nourishment, warmth security, love and nurturing, all from one action. We are programmed the gain all of this simply by putting something into our mouths. As we grow older that nipple is replaced by a thumb. Later still by the lollypop and even later by maybe a chocolate bar, a nice meal, a drink or even a cigarette. During all these stages we put food and drink into our mouths, both to nourish us and also reward us or, just to make us feel good. Expand this to smoking, drinking, nail biting and emotional eating and you should start to see a small part of the much bigger psychological picture.
The More Involved Answer:
You may ask the question; why don't we just grow out of it? Well you can't because it's hard wired within us. It's a natural function of the human organism to stay alive. Part of this survival instinct is to eat. We need instead to look at what causes us to over eat. We need to look at what's happening in our lives, our careers, relationships, personal finances, feelings of self-worth etc. These are all stressors that add up to creating a state of internal anxiety that triggers the emotional state to gain oral satisfaction (putting something in your mouth to make you feel better). Be it nail biting, smoking, drinking or in the case of this page, over eating.
CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypnotherapy can help you to resolve the emotional conflicts that are causing the problem. These are nothing more than bottled up emotions and so once found and released, the symptom itself then dissolves.
