Therapies Using Hypnosis

Hypnosis is often used as an adjunct to other therapies, as well as a therapy methodology in an of itself.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Clinical Hypnotherapy is ideally suited for treating the more simple problems such as smoking, nail biting, goal setting pre-test nerves, slimming, stress management, confidence boosting etc.

An example of the use of Clinical Hypnotherapy would be; a young man consults an Hypnotherapist because he keeps failing his driving test. During the test he becomes quite anxious, and makes mistakes. In this case, the Hypnotherapist would relax him into the hypnotic state - where he would find it easier to accept positive suggestions - in this case, positive suggestions to the effect that he will 'find it easy to stay calm, relaxed and confident during his driving test.' Clinical Hypnotherapy is also extremely good for general relaxation.

Analytical Hypnotherapy - Hypno-Analysis

Analytical Hypnotherapy (psychodynamic psychotherapy utilising hypnosis) is used to discover and remove the originating cause of the problem/symptom/anxiety. (Both Analytical and Suggestion therapies can of course be combined during treatment.)

Hypno-Analysis can be summarised briefly as the doctrine of 'cause and effect'; every effect (the symptom) must have a cause. Hypno-Analysis will find and release the cause of the problem - and hence the symptoms disappear. Emotional problems respond particularly well to Hypno-Analysis. The object of analysis is to bring you to a 'moment of surprising and liberating enlightenment', and one can be fairly confident of a release within ten sessions of therapy. With analytical therapy, we are talking about a complete and lasting release, by finding and removing the originating causes - as opposed to mere control of symptoms by; dieting, anti-depressants, herbal remedies, smoking, drinking etc.

There is no reason why anyone should put up with something 'inside themselves but outside their control', provided they can devote time, money, effort and self-discipline to be free or their problem. The use of hypnosis dramatically 'speeds up' analytical therapy, and will achieve similar results in just a few weeks to those expected from a more conventional three or four year course of therapy.

Hypno-Analysis is usually completed in about 8 to 12 weekly sessions. The sessions take (on average) about 50 minutes each. Although in hypnosis you are in fact 'wide awake', you are also very relaxed, so people generally find it easier to talk about emotive issues.

CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT Cognitive behavioural therapy provides new ways of thinking and ultimately feeling within a short period of time, this therapy usually takes between only 6 - 9 sessions. This is opposed to, often frequently long therapies. Some therapies can go on for many months and even years which, paradoxically may hold that person back from going forward. The longer therapy continues, constantly reminds the client, that their problem is something drastic, becomes more reliant on the therapist, with nothing happening in respect to coping or feeling better.

The effectiveness of CBT can be greatly enhanced with the use of hypnosis. When hypnosis is used with CBT it forms two parts to each session:

  • The first part of the session is discussing what’s happened, how this has affected you, is it realistic or negative? If the latter, discuss different perceptions, ways this can change, be dealt with. You decide what you want to deal with in the short, medium and long term. During this part Harry may give you some self help sheets, for you to take home and consider.
  • The second part is relaxation, using gentle hypnosis, placing into your mind wide-set parameters of anticipation and change for the future. You have an ability to adapt and feel good about changing. You do have more choices in life.
