MS Sufferer Jodie Overcomes Phobia of Needles
and Injections

Jodie consulted me for her overwhelming fear of needles and injections. As fate would have it, she found herself in an unusual position in that after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she was given hope for her condition in the form of a long course of treatment. the only problem for Jodie was that her medication would have to be injected!

Jodie's own words

"I was diagnosed with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis early this year however; I have had MS now for just under three years. Due to my form of MS and the distinct pattern it has been following, becoming more active with my last few relapses, I was offered a choice of four treatments. These treatments are known as disease modifying drugs which would hopefully give me a better quality of life in the future.

I was then given the news that the only way these drugs were given is through injections which you do yourself at home just like you would brush your teeth everyday. As I had a complete phobia of needles and injections I thought don’t be so stupid how on earth can you compare sticking a needle in your arm to a routine task such as brushing your teeth?

I thought no way, absolutely no way on this earth am I self-injecting three times a week. The nurses still wanted to give me the information about these drugs though and show me the equipment I would use. However I felt sick and faint just looking at it. The more I read about the drugs the more I knew I ought to be doing this to give myself the best future possible. As my consultant told me, I didn’t have to do this though if I was diabetic I would have no choice, but I did have the choice and that could possibly be one of the hardest decisions I made when I said yes.

So I went to see Harry, as a very nervous wreck that was trying to hide her tears of fear from him. He saw straight through me and after a consultation and two amazing therapy sessions I started my treatment two weeks ago. I have now given myself six injections to date over various parts of my body and I feel so relaxed and calm when I do it. Harry has given me the chance to do something in the way of shaping my future. Now, when I need an injection I don’t physically throw up, scream or shout at the doctors and let my presence be known to everyone in the building. Instead, I compose myself and just get on with it like brushing my teeth. When I inject myself I know I’m doing something positive for my future and I feel so proud of myself afterwards. After all it doesn’t even hurt."
